Why would we do this to a Steam Deck...

Dipublikasikan tanggal 25 Jun 2022
The Valve Steam Deck is great, but there's one big problem with it. This solution shows that sometimes 'can' = 'should'... Full video here: id-tv.org/tv/video--DUWTteit-0.html

  • You already know an absolute madness is about to go down when Linus has his glasses on.

    • Hell yeahhh 😆

    • @Shlaimer Lab Yeah probably xd

    • @EHC He just didnt show it probably 😂

    • Hey now At least he didn't drop it.

  • Best Part: They did all this while leaving the steam deck up and running

    • the battery died when they put it down

    • @Dravya Mehta wdym is it something to do with ltt Whatsapp dude people talking about

    • 40 years later robots are gonna operate on him without anesthesia

    • How to get electrocuted if you don't what you're touching 101:

  • I failed at step 1: get a steamdeck.

    • Finally got my 512mb Steam Deck, now just to download games onto it on my slow ass connection... Got it within a week since email to purchase off reservation.

    • @neuron Activated V2 nah 1 order per verified account with history of previous purchase on steam, preordered mine over a year ago and got it last week! Just a bunch of gamers in a super queue 😪

    • I just got mine Friday, actually came in early. I was in the Q3 line, they are actually making double the units now. I got the 512gb and love it, sorry but I'm not going even attempt opening it up. Honestly it's not that loud, yes it's louder than the Switch but your holding a mini gaming pc in your hands lol.

    • Some I reserved my and did not get my email that it is ready

    • @aare pelaa ah yes, it was supposed to be same but i accidentally wrote sama, I thought ill keep it as sama because it meant "same" in indonesian, turns out sama is also same in finnish yo

  • Wasn't the rpm like 5700 at first from the video? So more like 1300rpm reduction

    • @tehj15, hahaha

    • I think Linus Math Tips is another channel...

    • They address It in the full video, but linus thought it was at 7 thousand not 5 so when it dropped down to 4k he thought it was 3k down.

    • @luca luca Yea what I meant by that is that the temps went back up but the performance was better and the fans were spinning slower.

    • @k1x no they don't, the temperature without a fan was immediatly 10° cooler, After a while was 5° cooler but with 13% better performance, After they added a fan was even Better obviously.

  • Some of your other shorts have been a little awkwardly acted or paced, but you guys really found your footing with this one! Make more like this!

  • Needs to be a removable cooler, so when playing games you just attach it to a back plate and enjoy cooler system.

    • They did make it removable

    • yeah but thermal paste

  • It's actually really fascinating what can be done with the steam deck especially with 3D printable back plates

  • Honestly love Linus and Alex videos... It always reminds me of 2 brothers getting up to mischief but by doing cool stuff.

  • I love that you do stuff like this always keeping ingenuity alive

  • Absolutely love the idea of taking a slim, powerful handheld gaming device, and turning it into a hotrod, to maximize performance, and potentially appearance as well

  • I don't mind doing the Shorts but maybe do them for videos that haven't launched yet. Sorta like a teaser instead of a recap

    • @PK88 Ah yes, TikTok folk. You talk like you're 70

    • @TheDeathmail If you'd notice, my comment was from 3 weeks ago, back when it had come out... And it's not an Ad, since it fully recaps the video. I'm saying they should make it an Ad or a teaser to be more effective.

    • It's an ad for an older video...

    • @Volk Swagen Thats why I usually just watch the shorts, saves me time having just the highlights of a 20 minute video and I dont think im actually losing on anything really that important, that said thats mostly because I watch this out of curiosity and not because I want to make the upgrades shown in them, if I was to do them ofc I would watch the full video. The shorts are honestly a great strategy for the channel, in this very comment section you can see how some prefer shorts and other prefer the full length videos (tho i dont get why some of these geeks get so angry at ppl that prefer watching the shorts)

    • Shorts generally reach more people who aren’t already subscribed than normal videos

  • This looks unironically awesome. btw, I wanted to control the video to easily find a good still of the finished result without attempting to perfectly time a pause, so I found out that swapping out [/shorts/] with [/watch?v=] showed me the short as a regular video with regular controls. Useful to know, but irritating that ID-tv doesn't make controls an easier to find option like an "Enable Controls" under ⋮ button.

    • Wow thats sone bigbrain finding im sure barely anyone is aware of :O Phone users: reeeeee

    • Yooooo thanks, this is hella useful

  • Do a full metal chassis and see if you can manage fanless. Even if you need to use ridges to increase surface area.

  • Great work! Now are you manufacturing on-demand ordering and manufacturing for back plates and coolers? What about a cooler that runs horizontal across the back of the steam deck? Could see lateral heat pipes tieing into a sturdy touchable heat fin matrix.... Don't forget to waterproof!

  • There should be a version of it where it comes default with a cooler but you can just snap it on and off to carry it, or just have the cooler lay flatter but be more wide.

  • Next thing you know, you’re going to modify it into a full size PC, coming full circle.

  • honestly I wish valve made a steam deck that could easily be watercooled

  • How do I download the heatsink?

    • It's sold separately but you can buy it for 99 extra at the Bethesda store

    • Comes as a paid DLC.

    • Naah man, first I gotta download a graphic card for my computer

    • Hongmeng Store With CCP Account

    • from amazon store just 50mb+

  • You need to make an aluminium backplate (that's thermally coupled to the internal heatsinks) to replace the plastic one the Steam Deck comes with. Come on guys, you made a solid gold Xbox controller shell, so I think you could manage an aluminium shell for the Steam Deck

    • @GizmoJuggler Just dip it in liquid nitrogen ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    • It might get to hot to hold it with your fingers.

  • I like how engineering overlaps, cars and computers perform better when cooling is increased.

  • I am so bored I am watching the shorts of a full video I already watched 😂

    • Me too

    • @Adam LeRoux to bring more views to the video some may have missed thus bringing in more revenue.

    • Their teams timing on the release of these is more than a little suspect. That being said they aren't the only channel I watch that does this. No idea why.

    • How was it?

    • Haha lol i thought the same xD

  • I heard You can actually connect VR to it so if I ever end up buying one then I’m definitely trying that.

  • It's so surprising how I've gone from being so excited about a product to being completely indifferent. Maybe it has something to do with my inability to buy one.

  • Valve: Dont open the steam deck, it could kill you. Linus: We open it while it is running.

  • It doesnt look that bad too! It barely extends the height of the handles and it doesn't provide any uneasiness while holding. I'd say make an extended one that spans the whole back of the deck but make it a little more low profile. People would actually buy that.

  • The thing is, if an actual manufacturer did this. Everyone would be screaming at them for not following convention.

  • That is honestly fantastic, but I'm probably just gonna wait until something that already has that at retail comes out for under $350 and still to playin' at home.

  • I would literally buy the steam deck straight from you guys if you did this for me

  • If the cooler were wider and not taller than the controller grips, it might even become practical

  • Linus is the kind of guy would run passive cooling on his GPU if he could.

  • They should make a water cooler plate thingy that covers the whole back side of the steam deck

  • Razer just made an external cooler fan to slap on your cellphone. I wonder if using one of those on a steam deck would do anything?

  • I'm waiting for steam deck 2. Little phoenix amd chip will be 4 zen 4 cores and same compute unit RDNA 3 gpu. It will be far more power effecient, but also faster if pushed to the same wattage.

  • Good idea, but it’d be cooler to put it on top instead of on the back

  • Correction: they didn't drop 3000 rpm on the fan, just around a 1000. Linus misread 5700 rpm as 7500 rpm in the initial test.

  • So, no cap, i would love this modification on my deck!

  • Nice work with the deck i hope i had this

  • And also it ran like 10% faster. But I don't think that ended up increasing fps by any noticeable margin.

  • The whole project ends when you need to "come closer" to actually hear the fan. The same with the Switch, I only hear the fan if mute the volume in a silent room

  • A better solution is to remove the fan so it doesn’t make as much sound

  • One day there will be a console with good graphics, portable, good memory, will have a week long battery, and water proof. Gaming companies will never give us what we want though.

  • Yup taking something that is meant to be portable and converting it into a bulky liability. Revolutionary!

  • Linus was wrong about the temperature drop and RPM drop, without adding a fan there was NO BENEFIT AT ALL

  • I wouldn’t mind I was shocked how light the steamdeck felt to me

  • I mean, they had to cut expenses on building this to make the selling price lower, otherwise it would be way more expensive than it already is.

  • Great idea it's going to last way longer now.

  • Linus is obsessed with processor cooling 😌

  • Please note you could get your Steam Deck bricked by Valve if you do modify your deck

  • Love how you modify it!

  • Which makes me think of a heatsink backplate. Just make it away from touch

  • In a couple years time I'll buy the steam deck pro, I don't think it's worth it right now. The idea is good; however, it's too ambitious.

  • Watching Linus from young face to Santa midwest after all this years. I feel old.

  • Now this is a mod I'd actually use xD.

  • Yea, this is over selling the performance of the added Heatsink. I believe alex mentioned the thermals were better but there was NO 3000RPM drop.

  • Actually you only dropped 1000 rpm right?

    • You'd be amazed at the sound difference.

    • @Umair Zia yup

    • @Umair Zia have you? Yes, temps were the same, but core clocks and efficiency was up 10-15%. Meaning games could run better with the same temps.

    • @me2olive No, it was already performing at like 13% better, only limited by the power limits of the device.

    • This is the problem with ID-tv shorts for a tech video, the short gives a very different impression from the actual results. They needed to add a Noctua to get this to be viable.

  • "We've customized a steam deck to fit in this large rectangular casing and have attached it to a monitor and keyboard!"

  • Is there a full version of this short? I feel like a full video is needed for this lol

  • we not only dropped ten degrees on our gcu, we also made the steam deck close to unusable

  • I really love the "Hotrod style" on that Steamdeck

  • Is the intended audience the main LTT viewers? I appreciate the work you guys put into making the shorts entertaining, but the factual errors and the late release make it feel "second class" to me to the main content.

    • @Kieran surely *if* YTR subs gave them money, and the kind of people with YTR tend to watch their favourite content creator’s videos when they come out, it would be beneficial to make this short _before_ the main video to get 2X the views from one person?

    • i think they're effectively ads for the main videos, not everyone is willing to watch a 20ish minute video, but they might be more intrigued and willing after a short.

    • For real

    • Shorts are good at spreading with how much ID-tv are pushing them right now. Whilst the shorts themselves don't make money except maybe from YTPrem subscribers, they can pull in channel subscriptions and point people to the full video they might want to check out.

  • It went from 72°C (161.6°F) to 64°C (147.2°F). I'm not a tech guy, but 14.4°F cooler seems pretty insignificant. And now you can't even close the cover. I hate this mod.

  • You should cpu swap and gpu swap the steam deck

  • Best part: Now you don’t put this in your pocket or bag or take it anywhere because if you get crumbs in the Cooler you are screwed!

  • Could you use the razor brand fan that attaches to the back of your phone?

  • Nice, though this is only the first run of decks. I'm sure future holds better ones.

  • Imagine someone trying to gran the deck by the new shinny handle on the back

  • Linus looks like the chemistry teacher that forces you to wear eye protection for mixing salt with water

  • 3000 rpm? In the full video it was 300. And you mounted a fan on top to maintain lower temps.

  • This looks uncomfortable to hold and it also completely eliminates the things portability

  • Couldent this have been designed to be flatter and wider to take up like an extra 1/4 inch on the back

  • I would ligit use this, like, it's super small compared to the deck, and it makes it way cooler! Where can I get the parts!

  • Honestly... yeah, it is loud. I'd be worried about touching the new heatsink and burning my hand however.

  • It's ok.....but Linus you could do better.....you know it. Make a mini flat style rtx 3090 cooler for the backside. Cool the gpu as well as the board and it won't stick out so much. Maybe add some thermal pads to help transmit heat from the board.

  • You know its serious business when the cnc machine is turned on

  • For a moment I thought he was going to say. Thankfully we have a solution. Build a daesktop!

  • The steam deck even before the changes to the fan profiles wasn't particularly loud. I don't understand the need to get something completely silent when your chair, the controls, the environment and you are all going to contribute to the background noise.

  • Best bit is that the portability is hardly affected

  • I love to buy the modified version by ltt

  • The video quality is a lot cleaner on the shorts than the full production. 🤷‍♂️

  • Just what I want to do to my brand new gaming device. Rip it apart and install a giant hunk of metal hanging out of the back of it so it won't sound like a jet taking off.

  • What he doesn't mention is that it did basically nothing to fan rpm or temperatures until they added a noctua fan to the heatsink and Jerry rigged it up to a test bench power supply lmao, those are the results he shows

  • No liquid cooling?! I'm disappointed in you Linus

  • Correction. They made a Ratrod Steam Deck. A hotrod implies they know this would work and it looks good. That is a Ratrod!

  • I’m going to get a steam deck just to duct tape it to my pc to say I improved it.

  • I still don't know how alex manipulated linus buying a cnc machine

  • If it was anyone other than LTT I'd be crying at the mangling of that precious deck right now. But Linus? . . meh, should be fine.

  • If you haven’t actually watched the video they made on this, please do, it’s great.

  • As an RTX laptop gamer i will agree 70C is WAYYY too hot My laptop is one of the best cooling laptop for its price ($1k) and usually on high-quality games- ill use FNAF SB for example, at med-high settings, i get 110-130 FPS at 65-70C which is incredible for a laptop My last laptop went up to 90C which is INSANE

  • They should have tried the vortex cooler with this

  • I would love to have a steam deck but they don't sell them on my country

  • Still waiting to find out when LTT is going to sell the mod kit for this 🤔😋

  • Wouldn't be surprised if his next vid was about making a steam deck into a PC

  • Aren't you going to have a burning radiator in the open if you do that ?

  • I have absolutely no desire to get a steam deck. I just don't get what the appeal is. Do people really find themselves in situations where it's conevienent to lug around something so large just for a little bit of gaming while in the airport or something? I just can't imagine it fitting into my life conviently. More power to the people that want though.

  • "It's kinda loud!" My GT 430 : Rookies.

  • why not make a complete backplate in metal, scan the plastic one in 3d , add some contacts for the internal hotspots ... maybe a fancy 3d printer can do some "metal" printing ...

  • An external heatsink is great and all , but can it be water cooled 😒

  • Can you watercool the steamdeck and overclock it if possible??

  • Imagine if you fabbed a whole new backplate with a cooler across the whole back.

  • Love the idea they should add these like a Nintendo 64 controller/console upgrade expansion pack¡!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOW COOL!!!
