Writer: Shame lingers for loved ones after a suicide

Dipublikasikan tanggal 14 Sep 2019
In the wake of the deaths by suicide of two mental health advocates, CNN's Michael Smerconish speaks with Peggy Wehmeyer about living with the shame and stigma of having a loved one die by suicide. If you or someone you know needs help, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-TALK (8255). #CNN #News

  • I suffer immensely, but don't actually do it because no one would miss me anyway. It would relieve me of life's suffering though, so goes through my mind a lot (can't help it, I've had one of the most abnormal and miserable lives a human can have!). The only thing that really keeps me from taking the final steps is people in other countries, as bad as I've had it, we can't imagine what people in some worse parts of the world go thru. I would tell my life story, but wouldn't fit here, long and horrible :-)

  • Democrats love this adult aboshin makes me sick !!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hi everyone, I just published a video about my experience with suicidal thoughts and depression. If you are struggling with similar thoughts and feelings, or if you want to better understand someone you love who suffers from depression, I hope it helps you to hear my story. ----> id-tv.org/tv/video-Yk0rQrewBBc.html

  • There's no need to do anything, all you need to do is pray. You can pray anything away...you can pray the gay away, pray the depression away, pray the poverty away, pray the loneliness away. Just pray pray pray, while the church preys preys preys. Tin foil hats and spaghetti monsters rule!!

  • This is such a joke coming from the Rothschild MSM.

  • After reading a post talking about suicidal ideation and action brave then reading the comments it hit me that suicidal people want to help... I used to think all of them had the "if you don't care about me why should I care about you" mentality: and while some do, it isn't the majority. It depends how people treat them I suppose. It was fascinating seeing comments about people ready to end their suffering, but at the same time when someone reached out to them they showed so much compassion that they didn't give themselves; telling others not to do the thing they most wanted to do... despite knowing they felt the same way.

  • She's very articulate about this...it's so tragic.

  • I thought this was the onion for a minute.

  • Can never tell by looking at someone what they are feeling on the inside while hiding tremendous amount of pain & despair. No one is immune from this.

  • What if it wasn't suicide?...

  • My brother died by suicide in 2008. I've never felt shame over it. In fact, I am very forthright when I talk about him. No one but God will know why he chose that final path. My only shame is that I failed to do anything when I saw the red flags (signs). If you have shame about something, you keep it hidden. It needs to be brought out into the open so people can act.

  • As a retired psychiatric technician/nurse who has suicide in my family, and I have worked with post suicide families, I wear my semi colon tattoo on my wrist. So many young people see my tattoo and become free to open up to me, on the street, in stores, restaurants, Etc. To share their needs, stories and hurt. I always stop, listen and hear them.

  • Good god, that poor woman who had to experience those ignorant questions.

  • I have a semi colon on my wrist, 2 grand fathers committed suicide, several nephews have attempted. I am a retired psychiatric technician/nurse, I have worked for over 38 years with psych patients in suicidal situations, it is devastating. The "stigma" is devastating for survivors.

  • People keep saying "Oh every country has mental health issues." But not every country has the same rate of depression and suicide. And a lot of these mass shootings are basically even more horrific versions of suicide. I don't expect CNN to think much about this though.

  • Simple fact remains most ppl who commit suicide were listening to CNN on a daily basis.

  • I have to say it. The "Comments" section here contain more, and more reprehensible, comments from Trump voters, Bible freaks, psychos and bigots -- and they're much the same crowd -- than any I've encountered in weeks. What is wrong with you people? Ethically or psychologically? Don't any of you have enough decency to leave this woman alone? I suppose I just answered my own question.

  • wow, the ignorance of people is astonishing! Why would someone keep pressing for details about someone's spouse's death? There are truly no no manners anymore! At least have the decency to ask, "Do you mind if I ask..."

    • @Lunar Module Absolutely! It's horrifying, the license we give to other people to judge us simply by playing the "social media" game. Everything from snapping selfies, trying to make their lives look better than someone else's sets off a horrible chain reaction of one-upsmanship, as well as the implied "begging" for others' approval! "Here, look at this, look what I have, look at ME and tell me you love me! Tell me you want MY LIFE! Tell me I'm important!" Those who engage so endlessly have given away their power to others instead of living for their own purpose, their own loves and their own growth! Truly it's an intellectual infants' playground and they're trapped in it.

    • LadyJAtheist ...I seriously don't remember people being so rude and obtuse 10 to 15 years ago. The only thing I can hang it on that extends over all age groups is smart phones and social media. Remove that and suicide rates would probably drop instantly.

    • @Lunar Module sad but so true!

    • I've come to find out most people are like this...all lacking of any social graces. Social media has destroyed it all.

  • ssri's + guns = mass shootings and suicides

  • Man these threads are russian trolled up.

  • Are you sure they committed suicide??

  • Not only is there nothing morally wrong with suicide, it is often the most rational option, even for perfectly healthy people. And those thinking of it or trying to carry it out have an inviolable right to noninterference/respect for personal autonomy. plato.stanford.edu/entries/suicide/

  • "mental illness"?? it's this insane disgusting pathetic idiotic fucked up planet and we allow it to continue unabated because our lives are "our lives" and no one else's and that's how the rich and powerful want it , we kill ourselves or one another and the true problems of this world go unnoticed and not stopped but no one will stop it no one will even try , because "that's how it is" well that's a poor excuse ...but it's the excuse we get and give because no one wants to make noise or waves because they know they will just get shouted down and made to look insane or something or other excuse that we all tell ourselves will happen if we stand up and say enough, so no one does and no one will and the world revolves and drifts through space and time ....

  • I hope they find peace.

  • Jesus Christ saves to the uttermost.

    • It's idiots like you spreading myths and fairy-tales like invisible helpers, that bullshit is the reason healthy people go insane. There is no god.

  • The stigma people put on suicide's family is the nearest experience a healthy person could have compared to what an actual mental illness patient faces everyday in social situations.

  • This statement is not targeted towards the woman in the video, who's situation I know nothing about, but in most cases of suicide, the victim shows clear signs they are NOT okay for a LONG time before actually taking their life, yet everyone around them ignores the signals and do not actually give a shit about their suffering until AFTER they have already killed themselves. Most people are full of shit and could not care less about their family nor anyone else.

    • With a parent in a nursing home, you are dead on correct.

  • We have become a society of Hate, Expectation and Stress, then we are trying to find solutions

  • I had two brothers commit suicide. Don’t have no shame. They were adults. They had their own lives and choices.

  • This woman sounds REALLY selfish. Her husband killed himself and all she seems to be doing is whining about her 'shame'. Hey lady...stop thinking of yourself so much/worrying what others might think. Sheesh. Given you seem SO self-centered...maybe you did not do enough to help your husband.

    • @Daniel Schaeffer You tell me to 'Get a Life' and then say I have anger issues. Riiiiiiight. You ramped it up to start with pal...not me. And 'End of Communication'? What are you? A 1970's cheap, sci-fi movie? Ta ta.

    • I really am sorry for your loss, but you clearly have a lot of anger and resentment boiling away inside, and there's no reason for you to take your anger out on me. End of communication.

    • @Daniel Schaeffer You mean every spouse that kills themselves victimizes their surviving spouse? What a pathetically PC thing to say. You gotta be a prog...and a stupid one at that. Every suicide situation is different...dickhead. My older brother killed himself 6 months after my mother died because he simply could not live without her (and he had long-standing mental health issues - being raped while in boarding school for just one and mentally/physically abused by my father for another). So I suppose he victimized his significant other when he burned himself to death, idiot? You have not got a fucking clue what you are talking about you emotionally disturbed loser. Stick to whatever the fuck you do know about - cause this AIN'T it.

    • When her husband killed himself he was also victimizing HER. So now you're blaming the victim? Go get a life.

  • pbs.twimg.com/media/EEfCvuRWwAAaCld.jpg Ask the Question.

  • Suicide doesn't run in our family it gallops. There has been five suicides in my family. I have no one to talk too. I cry every day.

    • Jeez, I hope you're not sinking into a psychological black hole yourself. A suggestion -- maybe you could find a support group? If they're one near you? Or maybe finding some time for yourself everyday to do something you ordinarily like doing, forcing yourself to do it, and then discover that you can expand that daily time? I don't mean to,sound pushy, but maybe that'll help.

  • I identify with Peggy. I heard a person say at my beloved brother's funeral "Why didn't the family know"? He died by suicide and I was already tormented by guilt that I had not seen it coming. Several weeks after I came home I met a woman who lived quite near me. She asked if I'd been away on holiday. I told her what had happened and she said "you know that, in my Religion, anybody who kills themselves can't enter Heaven". Through gritted teeth I asked "What Religion is that? Catholic, she replied. I walked away. My brother's funeral, attended by over 200 people, was held at a Catholic Church in a Catholic Cemetery where he rests. A caring young Priest supported us and spoke of God's love of the "broken" and acceptance of their souls. I still question the Church but believe in God. Be careful when dealing with those left behind by suicide. We feel shattered, guilty and heartbroken on those early days. Time (plus a little therapy) and understanding are great healers.

    • So sorry asshile Christian's lied yet again about the Bible. No where does it say anyone goes for suicide, it's not committing murder. His guilt of what he did will get him in.

    • I once had a Muslim "friend" whom I casually informed that a mutual co-worker had recently committed suicide. He exploded in rage. "SUICIDE IS A SIN!" Needless to,say, I wrote the guy off.

  • The left is hyper emotional and suicidal

  • Mental health is a very BIG ISSUE since 2016.

    • That's because we have a psychiatric basket case in the White House -- we've all become as obsessive-compulsive as he is.

  • I hate smerconish no matter what he is talking about.

  • Well, YEAH, because suicide is the coward's way out, so the shaming is FULLY deserved. Then again, at least that means we have one less Democrat stinking up the human race, which is ALWAYS a good thing.

  • A local Meteorologist in my area of the country commited suicide a few days ago. He was only 26. And he had a successful career and was well-liked. A lot of people were floored by this. We still can't believe why. valleycentral.com/news/local/cbs-4-meteorologist-alex-herbst-dies-at-26

  • There is a reason Veterans are cowmiting suicide right outside VA hospitals... Republican Party prefers their veterans Dead. No need to compensate Dead Veterans. So, transfer that money straiight into some Rich person's wallet...

    • My family has served since 1914 and we still serve, Navy, Army, Marines, and Airforce, you Trump ass kissers who take your lips off of Trump's ass hole long enough to criticize Veterans need to crawl out of your mommy's bed and stop screwing mommy and get a life. Little baby Trump butt kissers.

    • Thanks, Myke.

    • Why did your parents raise such a sissy? 😂😂😂

  • id-tv.org/tv/video-GsRyVYCesok.html

  • Goes to show you, "little sayings" don't matter. They're cute but they don't get you through.

  • Jesus everyone mind your own business. Its not up to you to make people who dont want to live stay around and suffer. Fuck her for her bullshit shame.

  • Was this CNN story specifically published for the benefit of the Clinton Cartel?

  • CNN is fake news. 90% of all suicides are hit jobs from The Clinton Maffia!

  • Liberals are the enemy, They need to be rounded up and gassed.

    • u can make a better way but u choice evil way. printing money never runs out if it did america sytem broke a long time ago with the trillion in debt to china. oh come on think more. rich or poor they all need help at some point in their lifes wall street got ball out trump buisness got hlep and some many others good things happen and bad like the house market need hlep. hey dont choice the evil easy way there ways to get better improve n well get there

  • Hey man, shut up. You don’t know shit about depression!

  • Hypocrite people can't even follow what they preach

    • i think some try but they fail but it aint easy. their supernature happening . let see u try first before u say that even thought some of what u say is true but it is hard to do what they preach sometime because they well get tested after they preach they might fail the test because they afraid or ignorant or fighting off people bad spirit if they been helping some others people bad spirit

  • If you council depressed, heart broken people, you must have a sounding board.

  • For you whom have no souls... “bad luck and extreme misfortune will infest your pathetic souls for all of eternity” - Rocko’s modern life S3e8

  • This is what the Democrats should be talking about and spending money on, not gun laws and confiscation. Mental health is the biggest problem which leads people to use guns to hurt themselves and others.

    • @Natalie L'Oreal yes you are right research isn't hard but apparently being light to the issue is for Democrats. Instead of have a dick swinging contest about who can ban or confiscation guns the faster and yelling about trump all damn debate they should be more focused on bring more light to mental health. You can force Mitch McConnell and the Republicans to unblock bill focused on getting help to the mentally ill.

    • Three Or Nothing it’s the republicans like Mitch McConnell blocking the majority of any bill regarding mental health; veteran care; and even gun laws.... blame all you want; but select the right target... it’s called RESEARCH and isn’t that hard 🤦🏼‍♀️😏

  • As someone who has had to stop another from attempting suicide, I can tell you that it's the very last resort. Those who commit suicide are not thinking logically when they do it. In their mind, they're doing their loved ones a favor by getting rid of the burden they believe they have become. It is an act of desperation, and I can say that if one does not have someone to reason with them, or, more accurately, to force them to see reason, things will become tragic. Please, if you or someone you know is dealing with mental illness or suicidal thoughts, do your best to support them. Get help, for your sake and that of those who love you. You do matter.

  • Trump is the biggest cause of suicide

  • Long time ago when I was 15 we had a "suicide prevention" group come and address my school. All the students went to them gym and they gave a presentation. For a week after that I had thoughts of suicide and I never had ANY before that. After the week passed I didn't have any thoughts of it either. Even years later when I joined the military and suffered while seeing things that are not normal. I had no thoughts of suicide. I have no doubt that people that run these supposed "Help programs" kill themselves.

    • @Natalie L'Oreal Within 10 months of that program my friend hung himself. He use to call me every other day and the call didn't come. Can't say it was the program that caused it. But it didn't help. His letter stated he thought he was the reason for his parents divorce. That was 20 years ago so maybe they fixed it? But these deaths are now so......

    • Raging Monk while I can’t say i agree 💯 with what you’re saying... it is a good point... The DARE program was an epic failure ; and when the cops came to explain what “911” does ... the first thing I did when I got home was call 911!!! 😂

  • What did these people know about Hillary Clinton? Must have been really bad.

    • Russell T ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME!? She is in the woods walking her dogs in Vermont. She has nothing to do with our current political situation.... You legit need to get checked and maybe receive some electroshock therapy bro... not bc you need it... more on behalf of humanity. That way you can’t spread your ignorance like it’s fucking Ebola. 🖕🖕🖕🖕

  • That makes sense though. If you struggle with something, you're more empathetic to those with a similar struggle and eager to talk about what has helped you in the past. For some people though, the struggles don't completely go away.

  • "The secret of the Lord is with them that fear him; and he will shew them his covenant. Mine eyes are ever toward the Lord; for he shall pluck my feet out of the net. Turn thee unto me, and have mercy upon me; for I am desolate and afflicted. The troubles of my heart are enlarged: O bring thou me out of my distresses. Look upon mine affliction and my pain; and forgive all my sins. Consider mine enemies; for they are many; and they hate me with cruel hatred. O keep my soul, and deliver me: let me not be ashamed; for I put my trust in thee." - Psalm 25:14-20
